Elegant Tarweed

Madia elegans

Annual. A California native, the branched stocks of this tarweed are covered in flowers that have delicate lemon-yellow petals with a central red ring. Leaves are soft, grayish-green, and muted by velvety hairs. The plants exude a slightly sticky resin with a strong, yet pleasant scent. The flowers open in the morning and close during the heat of day, as part of its strategy for drought tolerance. Depending on location, it can get up to 4 feet tall. However, if you snip the main stem, it will remain shorter and get bushy. Great bee and butterfly attractor. Does well in clay soils. Deer resistant.
